About Us

Established in Glasgow in 1997 by Richard and Joe Freedman, ACS initially focused on the rental of highland wear to the Scottish market.

Over the years, ACS has evolved from a Scottish wholesale supplier into the leading provider of formalwear across the UK and we now employ over 100 people. ACS stocks more than three million garments and we process circa 400,000 orders per year.

Having received significant private equity investment, ACS is now looking to replicate its success in the US by establishing a purpose-built 240,000 sq ft facility in Memphis from which to service the US wedding and prom market.

Established in Glasgow in 1997 by Richard and Joe Freedman, ACS initially focused on the rental of highland wear to the Scottish market.

Operations expanded enormously and ACS moved into a purpose-built 25,000 sq ft facility in Glasgow.

ACS gains key contracts with multiple retailers and expands the product range to include formalwear as well as highland wear.

ACS outgrows the new facility and extends the warehouse to 40,000 sq ft. Our sister company, Xedo Software, is founded in the same year.

ACS moves to a new 190,000 sq ft facility on the outskirts of Glasgow. With state-of-the-art garment handling technology, the new premises helps us provide a best-in-class service.

Richard, along with his father Joe, established ACS in 1997. The business now employs over 100 staff, despatching over 400,000 outfits per year. In 2004, Richard won the Ernst & Young - Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and was then a judge for the programme for many years. He is a highly ambitious entrepreneur who believes that companies that are able to correctly harness technology will have a tremendous advantage over the coming years. He graduated from Stirling University with a BA (Hons) Marketing in 1994.

Joe has been involved in fashion retail for nearly 50 years. He ran a successful chain of menswear shops in Glasgow before setting up ACS with his son Richard.

Andrew has held a number of financial and commercial positions in industry with both listed and privately owned companies. Prior to moving into industry, Andrew was a senior manager with Arthur Andersen. Andrew qualified as a chartered accountant in 1995 after previously graduating from Edinburgh University with a BEng (Hons) Electrical & Mechanical Engineering in 1990.

Tony has held a variety of operational and planning roles in third party logistics companies, and in-house operations. He graduated with a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering in 1996 and followed this with an MSc in Logistics. Tony also gained his MBA at Strathclyde Business School in 2012.

Teresa’s executive career was in international blue chip companies and she has a great track record of successful strategic development, financial management, generating operational efficiency, joint ventures, outsourcing and ensuring good corporate governance and mitigation of risks. Formerly of HSBC, and now also on the Board of Clydesdale Bank PLC, Teresa has particular expertise in achieving the most effective routes to market in a digital age and at the same time maintaining a customer-centric approach.

During his early career, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Andersen & Co, and he spent some time on secondment to the investment team of the Scottish Development Agency (which was later spun into Scottish Equity Partners).

As the Business Growth Fund’s Regional Director, Scotland, Simon is responsible for leading their Scottish investment team’s activities around sourcing and executing investments and managing their portfolio post-investment. Simon sits on a number of portfolio company Boards and is also a member of the BGF’s Investment Committee. Simon has 20 years of experience advising and investing in companies.
